Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis: considerations for the cardiologist.

چکیده
The manuscript by Schietinger et al. (1) in this issue of iJACC (JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging) assesses patterns of late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) in the myocardium of chronic hemodialysis patients. The observation that the majority of LGE was not infarct related but was tied to the degree of left ventricular hypertrophy, particularly in dysfunctional segments, led the authors to suggest that LGE patterns within the myocardium may be able to serve as a clinical marker, perhaps for sudden death.

No Association between Gadolinium-Based Contrast Agents and Development of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis: a Case Study
Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF), previously known as nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy, is an emerging systemic fibrosing disorder that develops in the setting of renal insufficiency. Nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy (NFD) is a fibrosing condition of the skin which shows an increased number of dendritic cells, fibroblasts and thickened collagen fibers resembling scleromyxedema. It is charact...
متن کاملMRI safety: nephrogenic systemic fibrosis and other risks.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is now a commonly used imaging modality in many neurosurgical and neurological conditions. Although generally regarded as safe, there are a number of important safety considerations. These include a recently recognised, rare condition termed nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) that occurs in patients with significant renal impairment who receive gadolinium based...

BACKGROUND Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis is a debilitating and painful disorder with an increased stimulation of the connective tissue in the skin and systemic tissues. The disease is associated with exposure to gadolinium-based contrast agent used in magnetic resonance imaging in patients with renal impairment. METHODS The prevalence of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis has so far never been det...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Recent studies strongly link nephrogenic systemic fibrosis to gadolinium administration for magnetic resonance imaging. In a recent advisory, the Food and Drug Administration stated that all gadolinium-containing chelates are potentially associated with nephrogenic systemic fibrosis; however, most reported cases are linked to gadodiamide (Omniscan) and gadopentetate di...
متن کاملGadolinium deposition in nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy.
There is growing recognition of the association between the use of gadolinium-containing radiocontrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging and the serious dermal and systemic disease nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy/nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NFD/NSF). The pathogenesis of this entity remains unclear; however, our recent observations suggest a likely mechanism for the initial dermal manife...
